Viking has announced a groundbreaking 180-day world cruise that will transit the Northwest Passage through the Canadian Arctic, marking the first time a major cruise line has included the remote waterway in a circumnavigation itinerary. The Viking World Journey III departs London in August 2027 and visits 72 ports across six continents.
The Northwest Passage segment covers 12 days between Greenland and Alaska, navigating through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago with stops at remote Inuit communities and scientific research stations. Viking's expedition-class ice-strengthened vessel, Viking Polaris, will be used for this portion of the journey before passengers transfer to the larger Viking Neptune in Nome, Alaska.
Prices for the complete 180-day voyage start at $89,000 per person, including all excursions, flights, and premium beverages. Viking says the route is only possible due to reduced Arctic ice coverage that has extended the navigable window for the Northwest Passage from four weeks to approximately ten weeks during summer months.
