Spirit Airlines has announced a dramatic expansion into transatlantic routes, with introductory fares starting at just $49 one-way from select East Coast cities to European destinations. The budget carrier will begin service to London Gatwick, Dublin, and Barcelona in October 2026.
The rock-bottom fares cover the bare seat only, with checked bags ($65), carry-ons ($45), and seat selection ($15-40) available as add-ons. Even with typical extras, the all-in cost significantly undercuts legacy carrier pricing on the same routes.
Spirit will operate the routes using newly delivered Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which offer the range for transatlantic flights with the efficiency of a single-aisle plane. The airline will configure the aircraft with 220 seats in an all-economy layout.
Legacy carriers are bracing for the competition. British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Delta have already announced promotional fares on overlapping routes. Industry analysts predict the budget competition will reduce average transatlantic fares by 15-20%.
Consumer advocates welcome the increased competition but warn travelers to carefully calculate total costs before booking. Spirit's base fares are attractive, but the total price with necessary add-ons may not always represent the best value compared to legacy carriers' inclusive fares.
