Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that US citizens will be permitted to stay in Japan for up to 180 days without a visa beginning July 1, 2026, doubling the current 90-day limit. The change is designed to attract digital nomads and long-term leisure travelers.
The extended stay provision requires travelers to register with local municipal offices after 90 days and maintain proof of sufficient funds and return transportation. Work remains prohibited under the visa-free arrangement.
Tourism industry analysts expect the policy change to significantly boost Japan's already record-breaking tourism numbers, particularly among remote workers who wish to experience extended stays in cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.
