Japan Railways has reduced Japan Rail Pass prices by 20% for 2026, reversing last year's controversial price increase and making bullet train travel across Japan significantly more affordable for international tourists.
New Pricing
The 7-day JR Pass now costs ¥40,000 ($270), down from ¥50,000. The 14-day pass drops to ¥64,000 ($430) and the 21-day to ¥80,000 ($540).
Why the Reversal
Tourism officials reported a 15% drop in JR Pass purchases after the 2023 price hike, with travelers switching to budget airlines and buses instead.
- 7-day pass: $270 (was $340)
- 14-day pass: $430 (was $535)
- 20% reduction across all pass types
- Effective April 1, 2026
